Waiver & Safety Notice

Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is rewarding — and it is a contact sport. Here is what you should know about safety and the waiver you will sign before stepping on the mat.

This page is informational only. It is not the legal liability waiver and does not replace the signed in-person waiver and any other agreements required to train at Brabus Academy.

Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu involves close physical contact, grappling, takedowns, joint locks, chokes, and live sparring ("rolling") with training partners. As with any physical activity and contact sport, participation carries an inherent risk of injury — ranging from minor bumps, bruises, scrapes, and strains to more serious injury. By choosing to train, participants accept these inherent risks.

Our coaches teach in a controlled, structured environment and emphasize technique, respect, and partner safety. You always train at your own pace, and tapping (signaling to your partner to stop) is encouraged and respected at all times. Still, no training environment can eliminate risk entirely.

A liability waiver is signed in person

Before participating in any class, trial, or open-mat session at Brabus Academy, every participant must read and sign our liability waiver and release in person at the academy. The in-person waiver is the binding legal document; this web page is provided only to help you understand what to expect. If you have questions about the waiver, please ask a coach or staff member before signing.

Minors require parent or guardian consent

Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian read and sign the waiver and any required consent forms on their behalf before training. A parent or guardian should be available to provide consent and emergency contact information. Our children's programs are Little Ninjas (ages 4–7) and Little Warriors (ages 8–12).

Train safely

To help keep everyone safe, we ask that you:

• consult a physician before beginning any new physical activity, especially if you have a medical condition, injury, or are pregnant;
• tell your coach about any injuries, health conditions, or limitations before class;
• train within your limits, communicate with your partners, and tap early and often;
• keep good hygiene — clean gear, short nails, and stay home if you are unwell or have a skin infection; and
• follow the instructions of coaches and academy staff at all times.

This page is informational only

Nothing on this page is a contract, a waiver, a release of liability, or legal or medical advice. The terms that govern training are set out in the documents you sign in person at the academy and in any membership agreement. If anything here appears to conflict with those signed documents, the signed documents control.
